MINI REPORT
The impressive Joe Cole finished superbly from a Shaun Wright-Phillips cross in the third minute of injury time to give England a deserved win at Anfield.

Charlton striker Darren Bent made his debut. England had the majority of the play in the first-half but could not break down a well controlled Uruguay defence and went in at the break 1-0 down after a wonder strike on 26 minutes from Pouso, smashing a cleared corner into the top of Paul Robinson’s net giving the Spurs keeper no chance.

England started the second half strongly and Wayne Rooney went close. They got the equaliser they deserved on 75 minutes with substitute Peter Crouch scoring his first international goal heading home well from a Joe Cole cross. England controlled the game in the last 15 minutes and got their reward with Coles late late winner.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson said: "Joe Cole was fantastic. In my opinion, he was the best player on the pitch. He is a very mature player now he knows when to dribble, when to give the ball and when to defend. He was in our own box defending."

"Joe is not playing every game for Chelsea. Very often when he starts a game he doesn't finish it so it was good for him to get 90 minutes."

Eriksson said of Crouch: "That's Peter Crouch, he's different. It is almost impossible to defend against him. He showed how important he is, even if he starts on the bench."

On Charlton's Darren Bent Eriksson said: "That is the first time he has played and it is never easy. He played better in the second half and he was unlucky."
