MINI REPORT

England's first game of the season produced a good 3-0 win against Ukraine at St James Park. Skipper David Beckham opening the scoring on 27 minutes and Real Madrid team-mate Michael Owen made it two on fifty minutes heading home a Beckham cross. Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips capped a good debut with a great goal on 72 minutes and England had a few more chances to increase their lead in a good overall performance.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS

Sven Goran Eriksson said: "Shaun Wright-Phillips has incredible pace, good technique, he's a very positive player and I'm very happy for him.

"To have a debut like that must be a dream for every English schoolboy or young player. It was absolutely perfect. He took his goal very well. He showed that he is ready. Whether he starts a game or is in the squad, I don't know yet."

Shaun Wright-Phillips said: "It's absolutely everything I've always wanted - to become a footballer and play for England, so to get a goal on my debut tops it off," he said.

"My confidence is due to the players I've been training with last two days - it's down to the people around me. It's great to make people happy - my family, my friends and myself - that's all I want to do.

"Hopefully I'll get picked for the World Cup qualifiers in September, and I'll take each step as it comes after that."
