MINI REPORT

England’s qualification is out of their hands once again after Russia came from behind to win 2-1 in Moscow. Wayne Rooney gave Steve McClaren’s side the lead on 29 minutes controlling a Michael Owen flick on his chest and smashing an unstoppable volley past Vladimir Gabulov. Steven Gerrard missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 just after half time and England pushed further back and invited Russian pressure.

The pressure finally told on 69 minutes Rooney hauling down Zurianov to concede a penalty, and substitute Pavluchenko slotted home. Four minutes later Pavluchenko pounced to score from close range after Paul Robinson parried Alexei Berezutsky's shot.

England will now be watching Russia’s game in Israel closely next month and if they are to have any chance of qualification Israel need to get something from that game.
