MINI REPORT

England earned a creditable draw in the Algarve Stadium against the Euro 2004 hosts. Tottenham defender Ledley King had a debut to remember after giving England a 47th minute lead and putting in a solid performance. King stabbed the ball home at the far post from a David Beckham free-kick. Pauleta curled a free-kick past David James to draw Portugal level on 70 minutes.

The second half was once again ruined by mass substitutions by both managers.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS

Sven Goran Eriksson said: "If you talk about individual players, then of course there was Ledley King, who came in late but had an excellent performance. He showed that he's ready for big international games in a position that he hasn't played in for some time. He scored a goal so it could not have gone any better for him. He also did well alongside Gareth Southgate."

"Playing away in Portugal against one of the favourites for the Euro 2004 tournament, we did very well in both halves.

"Alan Smith came on and did well in the second-half, while Wayne Bridge put in some good crosses and Kieron Dyer also showed a lot of discipline when he came on."

England captain Beckham admitted it felt "weird" to return to his role on the wing for his country.

"It's a completely different game - I've got to get used to crossing the ball again. But if it's got to be done it's got to be done - anyone would give their right arm to play in the England team so I'm happy wherever I play."
