| England
got their World Cup qualification back on track by beating Poland
2-1. Sven Goran Eriksson dropped David James after his clanger in
Austria and brought in Tottenham’s Paul Robinson for his first
start for England, up front another Spurs player Jeramin Defoe was
given his first start in place of Alan Smith. Defoe wasted little
time in making his mark, turning brillantly in the box to give England
the lead on 37 minutes. Poland struck back just after half time
to make in 1-1 but and own goal by Glowacki on 58 minutes gave England
the three points. A good overall performance by England and they
deserved the win, Poland looked poor and did not deserved to get
anything from the game.

Sven-Goran
Eriksson said: "After Saturday's performance, we were very
criticised as individuals and as a team, Whether that was fair or
not fair is up to other people to say. But the only thing you can
do against criticism is to play good football and to win."
"Jermain Defoe impressed me with his contribution to the game.
He's been very sharp in training, especially this week," declared
Eriksson. He's very hungry. He's a big, big talent and he always
scores goals. Playing him alongside Michael Owen, there is no classic
English centre-forward, but they played well together. Excellent.
It couldn't have been much better for his debut. He played very
well and created chances. He is a great talent, not only that but
a great player and he will score goals." |
