MINI REPORT
An excellent performance from England resulted in a moral boosting 6-1 win against Iceland before Euro 2004.

Frank Lampard gave England a deserved lead on 25 minutes shooting home from distance with the help of a deflection. Two minutes later Wayne Rooney side footed in number two from a Gary Neville pass. The third on 38 minutes was the best of the bunch, Rooney smashing the ball past Arason in the Finnish goal from outside the box.

Sloppy defending from England let Finland in to score on 42 minutes

Nine changes at half time gave the England second XI the chance for a run out and Aston Villa’s Darius Vassell wasted little time is adding to his international tally with a goal on 57 minutes.

Ian Walker replaced Robinson on 62 minutes to make his first appearance for the national team in seven years.

It was 5-1 on 68 minutes, Nicky Butt’s ball into the box was headed down by Emile Heskey to Wayne Bridge who finished well from a tight angle. Vassell got his second and England’s sixth on 77 minutes after good work by Heskey who’s lay off on the edge of the box was curled home superbly by the Aston Villa striker.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS

Eriksson picked out the discipline shown by his side as the most pleasing aspect of the match.

He said: "It was a good result, it was a good performance for us. We showed discipline for 90 minutes, kept our shape in defending so it was very good. We defended well, there were good goals, good attacking play, good discipline which is the most important thing because in Portugal, if we don't have good discipline we will struggle."

"We know we can play 4-4-2 or 4-4-2 with a diamond so its up to us to decide what to do against France and Croatia and hopefully beyond that."
