MINI REPORT
Azerbaijan were never going to concede the eight goals they conceded against Poland on Saturday and as expected they defended as deep as it is possible. A frustrating first half ended scoreless as England were limited to long range efforts and trying to get in behind the mass of blue shirts, Frank Lampard smashed a long range effort off the post and Michael Owen should have done better with a couple of headed opportunities.

The opening goal finally came on fifty one minutes, a good ball by David Beckham found Wayne Rooney out wide and the Manchester United player burst into the box and crossed for Steven Gerrard who shot into the ground and over the keeper into the net.

Beckham made it two on sixty-two minutes beating the offside trap before calmly slotting the ball past the keeper. England had all the possession by could not break through to increase the lead.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS

David Beckham said: "The manager is like that with every one of the players, not just me because I am the captain and I came in for a bit of stick, but I certainly appreciated his comments," revealed the Real Madrid star. It is not difficult [to deal with criticism] because, if you choose not to listen to it, you carry on with your life and football and carry on enjoying it. You know when you have played well and when you haven't. My performance at Old Trafford was all right and I was pleased with it at St James' Park. But it is all about the team's performance.

"There was some satisfaction after hearing some of the comments after the last game but that's football - you have to take the rough with the smooth and play with a smile on your face."

Sven Goran Eriksson added: "David played very well, excellent. I think he played well on Saturday but he played even better here and scored a very important goal."
