MINI REPORT
A turgid lacklustre performance and the sending off of captain David Beckham meant England had to hold on at the end to secure the three points needed against Austria at Old Trafford. Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on 25 minutes. Things will need to improve if England are to beat Poland on Wednesday.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS

England boss Sven Goran Eriksson hinted England may try to overturn Beckham's red card. The Swede told BBC1: "From the bench I thought it (the second yellow card) was very, very harsh.

"I don't know if he touched him at all but there was no intention - it's very harsh. Maybe we can look at it - FIFA were here today so we will try to talk to them as well."

"With 10 men you need to be physically very strong. In the second half we defended brilliantly - everyone was together, fighting."

"As a performance I think we played very well in the first half - and when it was 11 v 11. Then we suffered but we did it together. I'm very happy with the boys' performance," added Eriksson, who confirmed Sol Campbell sustained a hamstring injury which could rule him out of Wednesday's final group six qualifying match against Poland.
