MINI REPORT
With England’s European Championship qualification hope’s hanging in the balance Steve McClaren’s side won comfortably on a freezing night in Vienna. Michael Owen went off injured on 34 minutes with a thigh strain and will be out of the game against Croatia on Wednesday.

England dominated the first-half against a shockingly poor Austrian side and went close through Owen and Joe Cole before Peter Crouch scored the opener on 44 minutes leaping unmarked to head home a David Beckham corner.

Crouch should have had a second early in the second-half but his close range header was well saved by substitute keeper Alex Manninger.

With all the changes made by both teams the game fizzled out into a non-event between two poor sides.
