Martyn     G.Neville     Campbell     Batty (Ince)     Adams*     P.Neville (LeSaux)      Lee     Butt    Dublin     Sheringham (Shearer)     Owen

Flowers     Keown     Southgate     R.Ferdinand     Hinchcliffe     Ince     Merson1 (Batty)      Lee     McManaman     Shearer*     Owen (Sheringham)

I have watched a lot of football matches over the years but it is safe to say that this was the the worst game of football it has ever been my misfortune to witness. England continuing their World cup warm-up were ravaged by injuries and had to field an experimental team.

Seaman      Campbell      Adams      Southgate      Le Saux      Anderton      Ince     Batty      Shearer*1      Sheringham (Owen)      Scholes1

England opened their World Cup 98 campaign in style with a very professional 2-0 win over Tunisia, Hoddle surprised everyone before the game by leaving out Manchester United player David Beckham and replacing him with Darren Anderton. England took the lead when Alan Shearer calmed the nerves heading in a Le Saux cross, and the impressive Paul Scholes sealed the three points in the last minute with a great goal. A good solid start to the World Cup.

523: v Romania, Toulouse, 15.06.98 England lost 2-1
Seaman      Campbell      Adams      G.Neville      Le Saux      Anderton      Ince (Beckham)     Batty      Shearer*      Sheringham (Owen1)      Scholes

England's World Cup came crashing down around them as they were beaten by the impressive Romanian's in Toulouse. Hoddle again left out Beckham, but the Man Utd player got his chance when he replaced the injured Paul Ince. England were poor for most of the game and went behind just after half-time. England only sparked into life when Michael Owen came on for Sheringham, and the Liverpool youngster drew the teams level near the end. But Romania scored right at the death to leave England in trouble.

524: v Colombia, Lens, 26.06.98 England won 2-0
Seaman      Campbell      Adams      G.Neville      Le Saux      Anderton1 (Lee)      Ince (Batty)      Beckham1      Shearer*      Owen      Scholes (McManaman)

England qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup with a comfortable win over Colombia. Hoddle bowed to public pressure and started with Beckham and Owen in place of Batty and Sheringham. England were never in any trouble and goals from Anderton and Beckham resulted in an easy win. England could have won by many more but it was a good all round performance.

525: v Argentina, St Etienne, 30.06.98 England drew 2-2 (aet) (lost 4-3 on penalties)
Seaman      Campbell      Adams      G.Neville      Le Saux (Southgate)     Anderton (Batty)      Ince      Beckham     Shearer*1      Owen1      Scholes (Merson)

England's World Cup dreams were once again shattered by the lottery of the penalty shoot-out. England matched the favoured Argentina all the way in the first half. Batistuta and Shearer both scored penalties in the first 10 minutes, and then Michael Owen scored the goal of the tournement on 16 minutes. Argentina drew level just before half-time. Then on 47 minutes the game was turned on it's head when David Beckham lost his head and was sent-off. Both teams played out the rest of the game, England defended superbly and could have won the game but for some crap decesions by the referee. Then the dreaded shoot-out, and once again England lost out.

526: v Sweden, Stockholm, 05.09.98 England lost 2-1
Seaman      Campbell (Merson)      Adams      Southgate      Le Saux     Anderton (Lee)      Ince      Redknapp     Shearer*1      Owen     Scholes (Sheringham)

England decided that they would produce their worst performance under Glenn Hoddle in their opening Euro 2000 qualifying game against Sweden in Stockholm. England made the perfect start when skipper Alan Shearer scored with a free-kick after only two minutes. But from then on they played like a team uncomfortable with each other and were unwilling to fight for each other. The Swedes were stronger and deserved to take the points, but England should have had a penalty at the end when Shearer was fouled in the box. Paul Ince was sent-off for two bookable offences and joined David Beckham in holding an unwelcome record - becoming the first English players to be sent-off in successive internationals.

527: v Bulgaria, Wembley, 10.10.98 England drew 0-0
Seaman      Campbell      G.Neville      Southgate      Hinchcliffe (Le Saux)     Anderton (Batty)      Lee      Redknapp     Shearer*      Owen     Scholes (Sheringham)

England needing to win to bring themselves back into the qualifying race for Euro 2000 made the fans suffer as we had to sit through the biggest load of shite it has been my misfortune to witness supporting England. England were devoid of ideas all game and with Bulgaria sticking every player in defence the game turned into a footballing nightmare. The booing at the end was the loudest I have ever heard at Wembley and Glenn Hoddle can be left in no doubt about the difficulty of the job ahead.

528: v Luxembourg, Luxembourg, 14.09.98 England won 3-0
Seaman      Ferdinand      P.Neville      Batty      Campbell      Southgate1      Beckham      Anderton (Lee)     Shearer*1      Owen1      Scholes (Wright)

England were again very unconvincing but they got the win they need to keep in touch with Sweden at the top of group five. Not a great game but it's the result that counts.

529: v Czech Republic, Wembley, 18.11.98 England won 2-0
Martyn      Keown      Campbell*      Butt     Ferdinand      Le Saux      Beckham      Anderton1      Dublin      Wright (Fowler)    Merson1 (Hendrie)

England fielded a patched up side due to a heavy injury and suspension list and turned in one of the better performances under Glenn Hoddles command. First half goals from Darren Anderton and Paul Merson set up the win and England could have had a few more but took it easy in the second half.
